Brunei, or Negara Brunei Darussalam as it is more formally known, is a small independent sultanate on the north coast of Borneo. The revered Sultan Of Brunei maintains a strong control over his country, steering its people to prosperity mainly on the back of its oil wealth.

As a result of this wealth the country has needed to rely far less than its neighbours on timber extraction to generate foreign income. Thus, there are parts of this small country where the pristine glory of Borneo's rainforests are preserved, in particular the Ulu Temburong National Park.

But the country is by no means free of the problems of a degraded environment, small-scale illegal logging, overfishing and the illicit trade in wildlife. To learn more select from these news categories --->.
