Recent forest destruction in Johor State, Peninsular Malaysia. One year later this land was converted to yet another oil palm estate to feed the world's insatiable demand for palm oil.

Palm oil production is one of the most contentious land-use issues facing some  countries in the region. The product finds its way into  processed or junk food products such as biscuits, chips, chocolate and instant noodles. Palm oil plantations support very little  forest-dependant wildlife.

Since the launch of this website in 2001, a variety of news articles relevant to the environment and ecology of Southeast Asia have either been hyperlinked, or cloned and archived.  There are around 2000 news articles compiled here.

School and college students have found these archives to be of great use, as they serve as a quick and easy-to-read snapshot of the often complex environmental issues which have affected Southeast Asia in the past decade or so.  The majority of articles are from the region's own local press, and much of the content stored here will have been lost long ago from most online newspapers.

All articles are reproduced purely for the purpose of non-profit Nature Conservation and Education : the original publisher or copyright holder is clearly referenced at the bottom of each page.
