Reaching around 9 cm, this small mudskipper mainly occurs in mangrove and higher tidal mudflats. The specimen illustrated here, however, had ventured at night from a small patch of back-beach mangrove into an area of rock pools and rubble on an exposed rocky shoreline. This suggests it is a nocturnal as well as a diurnal feeder.

The species is identified by the thin, pale vertical lines along each flank. The dorsal surface is patterned with alternating dark and light saddles. Both dorsal fins possess a thick dark stripe, bordered with a pale margin. The snout and cheeks are patterned with numerous pale spots.

The Silver-lined Mudskipper is wide-ranging throughout the Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia and the western Pacific Ocean.
