This species occurs a variety of habitats and is sometimes abundant in larger slow-flowing rivers in forested areas. It ventures into the shallows searching for its prey - mainly insects and crustacean larvae, and will also consume algae.

The Rosefin Rasbora is slender in form and is best identified by the dark-edged tail fin. In larger specimens there is a dark grey lateral stripe which may not be clearly evident in smaller fish.

The species ranges throughout Indochina (e.g. Tonle Sap, Mekong River Basin) and Thailand (e.g. Chao Phraya River Basin) through Peninsular Malaysia to Borneo and Sumatra.
