Pig-tailed Macaque

Adult Pig-tailed Macaque at Fraser's Hill, Peninsular Malaysia.

Easily distinguished by its short tail, the Pig-tailed Macaque is of stocky build with creamy-brown fur on the back, white underparts, and dark brown fur on the crown. It inhabits primary forest, but will venture to adjacent cultivated areas in search of fruits. As with other macaques, however, its diet can include small vertebrates and invertebrates.

The species is often trained to climb coconut trees and to twist off the fruits with their strong hands. A strong bond develops between the macaque and its owner.

The species ranges from Eastern India to most of mainland Southeast Asia to Sumatra and Borneo. It is absent from Singapore.
